The Financial Times, after having problems negotiating with Apple over app store terms, replaced their iOS app with a HTML5 mobile version and made their product available to over 700,000 users (on iOS, Android, etc.). Note the comments about discovery, traditionally the greatest value an app store can provide.

1) HTML 5 has sufficiently addressed the performance concerns of web-based UI to make most plugins superfluous.

2) The concept of an app store is transitory — they're great ways to get exposure and maybe even make money today, but they're not destined for the long-term.
